BOOK DESCRIPTION

A book about the life of alpinist extraordinaire Harald Berger. A friend and companion of the Huberbuam, who lost his life in a tragic accident.

Finding balance in life, or the so called “centre” is certainly a basic need of many people. Hari Berger considered it a requirement to pursue his goals in the mountains.

In recent years, he had not only become ice climbing world champion three years in a row, he had also been able to redpoint the world’s hardest mixed climbs in Switzerland, Norway and Canada. In addition to that, he managed first ascents of difficult long ice climbs in Canada and Norway as well. In summer 2003, he was able to redpoint the famous alpine sport routes End of Silence (Feuerhörndl) by Thomas Huber and New Age (Rätikon) by Beat Kammerlander. I late summer 2004, he added Des Kaisers neue Kleider to his already impressive tick list, and in summer 2005 he completed the so-called alpine trilogy by making an ascent of Silbergeier (8b+) in Rätikon. On December 20, 2006, Harald died in an accident while training for ice climbing.

Hari and Hermann Erber, a photographer, had always thought about putting together a book about ice climbing. Hari had always mentioned this as a dream project of his.

Hermann Erber and Kirsten Buchmann made this dream come true for Hari. Together, and with Hermann’s unique photography, they join Hari one more time on a journey that leads them back to the Trilogy, to Norway, Canada, the USA, Chile and Madagaskar.

This book is in memory of Hari. It is a tribute to exploration, the mountains and alpinism. It’s not about athletic performance, it is about remembering a grand time.

All proceeds go to an account that is managed by the Salzburg Search and Rescue team, so that in case of a similar event, others can receive help quickly and in unbureaucratic ways.
